How do I get Married in Gibraltar?

Updated: Feb 12, 2021

Gibraltar is a well-known and famous wedding elopement destination.

Over the years Gibraltar has been famous for the elopements of many celebrities, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Sean Connery got married there not once but twice!

Since the swinging sixties thousands of couples have chosen to elope to Gibraltar, giving it a cool kudos as an elopement destination and this is why I absolutely love photographing elopements here.

With the help of a trusted wedding planner in Gibraltar you could, in theory, be married within 48 hours.

Last year, in 2020, we saw a huge rise in the number of elopement marriages due to global travel restrictions. Long distance couples who were separated by travel bans and visa issues were still able to marry during the pandemic. The stories they share have been fascinating.

2021 is looking set to be another busy year for long distance couples, therefore it is very important to get your dates booked at the Gibraltar Registry office asap.

A Gibraltar wedding planner can do this for you if you are planning from afar.

The location of Gibraltar is perfect for a wedding and a honeymoon all rolled into one. The Mediterranean climate is ideal all year round, combine this with a great selection of beautiful hotels and apartment rentals to choose from, you really can plan your wedding and honeymoon of your dreams.

My favourites are The Rock Hotel and the luxury Sunborn Yacht Hotel.

This link will take you to many different types of accommodation that’s on offer, for every budget.

With easy travel from the UK and via Spain, it really is the perfect elopement destination.

Another great thing about Gibraltar is that there are various locations for your wedding ceremony.

As well as the Civil Registry Office, Town Hall, you can also opt for the stunning private gardens, The Dell, within the Botanical Gardens with its tropical leafy vibe, the Rock Hotel for old school glamour, The Sunborn Yacht Hotel for luxury, Monscalpe Suite at the Top of the Rock is amazing for 360 views but watch out for the monkeys though!

I also love the Rendezvous restaurant at the Queensway Quay with views of the marina and Caleta Hotel at Catalan Bay, for their outside terrace ceremony and beautiful sea views.

Once your 20 minute marriage ceremony is over, it’s then time to head off and explore the Rock for a fun photo session, champagne spray on the beach anyone?!

There are plenty of fabulous places to visit for your wedding photos and all within easy reach.

I love driving my couples around once we have decided on the locations in advance. Having photographed many Gibraltar weddings, I can advise on the best places for fabulous photos, depending on the light and time of day.

Think dreamy sunset backdrops in the west to ultra cool rock n roll runway shots like John and Yoko. Or we can explore the top of the Rock in the nature reserve with stunning panoramic views across to Spain in one direction and the mountains of Morocco in the other.
